Grooved brain coral spawned for the first time using lab-induced techniques in May 2020 at The Florida Aquarium’s Center for Conservation (CFC). These systems use computers and LED illumination to create temperature, sunset, sunrise, and moon cues to simulate the corals’ environmental conditions in the wild. This project works in partnership with London’s Horniman Museum and Gardens to induce spawning. CFC is the home of the historical first spawning of Atlantic coral species including pillar, m

The knobby brain coral, Pseudodiploria clivosa, is a bouldering brain coral that is highly susceptible to stony coral tissue loss disease. This August, biologists at the Aquarium’s Center for Conservation observed this species spawn for the first time ever in the induced spawning lab! Kobby brain coral are known to spawn 8-10 days after the August full moon, and release gametes as late as 3:00 a.m. This makes them an ideal species to spawn in the lab! Like their coral cousins in phylum Cnidaria, the upside-down jellyfish or Cassiopea has established a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic dinoflagellates, a type of algae. Therefore in order to get the energy from their algae associates, Cassiopea must lie upside down in shallow clear water, like that often found around mangroves! They come in a variety of colors including greens, blues, and purples! They are capable of a mild sting, and they excrete a stinging mucus that is often quite c
