What are those strange shapes floating on the river? Known as ‘ice pancakes’, these happen when foam on the surface of a river freezes. Red Deer Stags with almost fully grown antlers grazing near the river Dee in the Cairngorms National Park in the evening of 27th July 2023. Winter conditions can be harsh in the the Cairngorms, with animals like these red grouse coming down off the hills to graze lower down. These birds were filmed this December, 2024, near Glenshee Ski centre, high up in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. Cairngorms Nature Red grouse are native to the UK and Ireland and are found in heather-dominated moorland.
