February 7, 1984 marked one of the most daring moments in space exploration. During Space Shuttle Challenger’s mission, astronaut Bruce McCandless II became the first human to perform an untethered spacewalk, floating freely in space without any safety line. Using the nitrogen-powered Manned Maneuvering Unit, he maneuvered himself nearly 320 feet away from the shuttle, orbiting about 170 miles above Earth at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour, experiencing complete freedom in the vacuum of space.
