We have also received all ages of red bats and sometimes a hoary bat or silver haired bat. We have 9 bat species native to New Jersey. Some are year-round residents and hibernate here. This adult male big brown Bat came to our facility last week from Richmond Ky very dehydrated, starving and very cold. He also has a hurt back right foot and his right wing is torn. He is doing much better. He has gained some weight and he is now eating good. We still have him on antibiotics and pain meds. He is out of the critical stage and in a guarded stage now. This big brown bat is checking out his enclosure. As he tries to make sense of why he can’t move through the transparent wall, we get a glimpse at his body through his wing membranes. Soon enough he finds a spot to climb where he will hang and rest. Bats are true hibernators. We have admitted several big brown bat infants in the past few days, all have dropped from their mothers due to environmental conditions or their mother sadly not returning and they become dehydrated and fall to the ground where they are discovered.
