On April 28, 1849, Sacramento’s first newspaper, the Placer Times, published its first edition in a small adobe building near the corner of 28th and K Streets, just east of Sutter’s Fort. Edward Kemble was the newspaper’s editor and was the former editor of the Alta California newspaper in San Francisco. The newspaper was printed weekly with the former wooden common press used to print the Californian newspaper in Monterey in 1846, the first newspaper in California. Kemble stepped down as editor
