In Greek literature, the Charites appear first in the epics of Homer (eighth century BCE), where their number is ambiguous; the two individual Charites named by Homer, Pasithea and Charis, do not appear in the better known account given by Hesiod (eighth/seventh century BCE), who gives the names of the three Charites as Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia in his Theogony (907–9).
