Donald Trump will welcome Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews just outside Washington on Wednesday, in a break with six decades of protocol that displays a huge amount of respect for the leader of the only other superpower.

In an article in the People's Daily, the official newspaper of China's Communist Party, centred on promoting a "constructive strategic and stable relationship", Mr Xie outlined four "red lines" that "are not to be challenged". These include the "Taiwan issue, democracy and human rights, development system and path and the right to development".
