The Detroit Tigers leaned into selecting late-rising prospects as part of their haul in Day 1 of the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday. The Tigers began the night picking shortstop Jordan Yost with the No. 24 pick, followed by catcher Michael Oliveto 34th overall, righty Malachi Witherspoon in the second round and lefty Ben Jacobs in the third round.

The Tigers took University of Maine lefthander Caleb Leys, a native of Middletown, R.I., in the fourth round on Monday.

Referring to Monday’s 17-round scramble, Conner said it was indeed like shopping with a time limit.
