John Wayne was once very eager to work with Cilnt Eastwood, only for the younger star to reject one of Wayne's best Westerns from 1969.

The point is that True Grit, unlike The Wild Bunch and a distressing number of other recent films, allows its story to speak for itself without self-righteous editorial comment.
