“La Cage aux Folles” is adapted from a play and the cult classic 1978 French comedy movie of the same name.

“La Cage aux Folles” is based on Jean Poiret’s 1973 farce of the same name. A popular 1978 French film replicated its success in Europe when it was released in the United States.

There is a third installment of the series, too, titled La Cage Aux Folles 3: The Wedding, in which Albin must marry a woman and have a child in order to inherit a large family fortune.
