An emergency meeting is planned for Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale as that city and others across Florida are facing state orders to remove rainbow crosswalks by early next month

Protesters have used multicolored chalk to fill in the crosswalk repeatedly since the state Transportation Department initially painted over the rainbow colors last week.

Tampa officials will remove 47 street murals to comply with a state crackdown on pavement art, a city spokesperson said Monday. Nearly half are part of a school crosswalk art campaign that the Florida Department of Transportation awarded in 2021 for its innovation and safety.
