A portion of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is back open after wildfires forced park officials to shut the park down earlier this month. The North Rim of the park in western Colorado is now accessible to the public.

The North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park reopened Wednesday, even as a large blaze continues to burn on the South Rim of the narrow, plunging canyon. The North Rim has been unaffected by the fire, which was sparked by lightning nearly two weeks ago. It’s now more than 6 square miles and 52 percent contained.

The North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is opening Wednesday, but lots of work still remains before the South Rim can open because of the lingering effects of the South Rim Fire.
