According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Denver Broncos have waived running back Blake Watson with an injury settlement. Watson suffered a PCL strain during their preseason finale victory over the Saints and now will hit the waiver wire.

In June, Sean Payton told reporters the words that’d come to define the Broncos’ backfield for two months: “Don’t start counting.”

A source said the Broncos on Monday also waived veteran cornerback Damarri Mathis in a move that was expected. Letting go of Mathis, who was a fourth-round pick in 2022 and played three seasons with the Broncos, saves them $ 3.406 on the salary cap. That was the nonguaranteed base salary Mathis had been on the books to make in 2025.
